Lyrics to our song - Miss Alissa

You know I try so hard
But I think you don't see
'Cause' I'm moving so fast
We call it rock n rollin'
My weapon seems usless
'Cause' your on to me
You are impossible to read
You're always straight controllin'

Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Gon' doo a voodoo until
You feel my power now!

You know I feel so smooth
I'm always struttin' when in motion
Make the little girls dance
'Cause' I'm rock n rollin'
It really doesn't matter
If you're hard to please
'Cause' when you give me your smile
I'm yours for straight controllin'

Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Gon' doo a voodoo until
You feel my power now!

You know I try so hard
But I think you don't see
'Cause' I'm moving so fast
We call it rock n rollin'
My weapon seems usless
'Cause' your on to me
You are impossible to read
You're always straight controllin'

Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Gon' doo a voodoo until
You feel my power now!

Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Oh oh oh Miss Allisa!
Gon' doo a voodoo until
You feel my power now!

Facebook profile for ideal target audience

This is an example of our idea target audience. We want our audience to be at quite a mature age, 16+. The reason for this is because most fans of indie rock music are of this age. The genre is mostly mixed genre and the ages range from 16 to 45. Dave Taylor fits our target audience perfectly as you can see he is about 18 and is a big fan of music, particularly indie/punk rock. It is clear he is a fan of indie music but not just from his liked pages. You can see his hair is slightly brit pop similar to Noel Gallagher and Jake Bugg. In terms of teenage vals, Dave seems like the rebellious type as Arctic Monkey and Royal Blood give off quite a rebellious vibe.

Evaluating our progress with star image

From our research into star image we have gained a greater understanding of how we want to position the artists. In the performance element, the band will provide support for the lead singer who will act as a classic frontman and will be happy. The Walls will be inspired by bands such as the Strokes and to some degree Oasis. For the younger lead singer we want to create a cute but empathetic feel. To get the image across from the younger actor we won't style their hair, and we will make it look messy to emphasise his rough upbringing. The older actor will be styled to look clean and tidy. By using close ups frequently we should easily be able to convey this message. The bands image is quite indie rock so we have asked them to wear casual clothing, jeans and a shirt for example, but suitable for the genre. A suitable colour scheme for this genre is black and white. The focal point of the band is indie style and the fact that the lead singer came from a rough background with nothing given to him.

1st tour poster draft

Here is the first draft that we will include at the end of the music video. We want it to include the bands logo which is a font similar to Pink Floyd. We like the font because it gives an organic feel to it as it looks like scribble rather than fancy writing.  The album cover for our band 'The Walls' is likely to include a brick wall background and we want this to feature on the tour poster as they will likely to be touring their latest album. However, we have yet to do a photoshoot of the band and obviously we want to include a picture of the band. Therefore, the poster is more than likely to change. Furthermore, we will change the dates because the door will be of the UK not just London. We chose to use a brick wall because it gives an urban edgy feel and it is quite common between indie rock bands, carrying on from the Ramones.

Our new logo

We have decided to change our logo font to Floydian as it is a more organic style font that suits the band as a whole. It's simple, smooth and suggests that the band isn't trying to heavily sell themselves to a particularly main stream audience. It will contrast the light and the dark sides of life in our day an age and the colours seem to relate to our previous media project giving us inspiration. The un-even writing represents how our music is independently different in every aspect, giving it an organic name. We will be using this font in our posters as well as our album cover in the future. The font gives an urban, edgy feel what I like and it looks like the band have not gone into too much thought about it as it looks like they've just scribbled it.

Change of narrative

There has been a slight change to the narrative. Originally, we were going to include the lead singer working in a restaurant serving tables before he goes to meet the band for the rehearsal. However, we decided this will be to hard show as the only way is to film this in a real restaurant during a real service and it is unlikely that restaurants would be ok with it. Therefore, we are changing the location to a prison, where the lead singer is visiting a friend. We can film this in a classroom in our school as we can print of different posters you would see inside a prison and stick them up on plain walls. We can also buy a yellow sash that inmates where and get them to where a track suit. We feel this will be much more effective and easier to film.

Risk Assessment

During the course of shooting our music video, which will be separated into two (working) days – one for filming the bands performance element of the video and the other for the main narrative. As well as this, a lot of our music video will be filmed in public which means you cannot guarantee the conditions when will film so precautions have to be taken.  There are many risks that needed to be assessed prior to the film day to ensure everything runs smoothly with no injuries occurring. I will present these risks in relation to our music video timeline.
Risk
Action Carried Out
Water from crashing cymbal could affect the electrics or camera lens
Filmed from slightly further out (using zoom) – drummer took precaution when filming this shoot.
As the narrative requires the boy to stumble out of the house steps – he could trip over and fall
The actor didn’t rush the action and took precaution whilst filming it
The scene where the father throws the guitar could hit someone or another car, or even fall out of the window during the action
We made sure he didn’t rush the action and took precautions. Also made sure there was no-one near (nor car) the line of fire
The low-angle shot where we have to film out the window the risk here is that the camera could fall out and break
The action carried out it is that we tightened the wrist strap to keep the camera more firm
Boy could trip up when running away from the house
Made sure his lace were tied up and took any further precautions, e.g. cleared any large rocks on the floor
In the scene where the boy meets up with the drug-dealer at the top of railway bridge – could slip if surface is wet
Made sure the surface wasn’t wet/take further precautions such as no fast paced movements that could cause any injuries
When the boy is sneaking upstairs he may trip and fall
We will make sure that when the boy is walking up the stairs he is making sure where he is going
The ‘fighting’ scene, which occurs on the same bridge, has similar risks and therefore similar actions need to be carried out to ensure no danger. The fighting could cause injury if done incorrectly
The fighting will be rehearsed and carefully done – the filming will be shot from far away to make it look realistic but also to ensure no close contact needed – limiting risks
When plugging in the instruments, they could get electrocuted.
Just make sure electrics are off when  you plug the cables in and then turn it on

After following these risk assessments we will have a risk free shoot day with no injuries taking place.

Band Similar to ours: Kings Of Leon

Kings Of Leon are an American rock band who portray an organic image. We can see this as in the picture, two of the band members are not facing the camera which showcases their countertype to traditional synthetic rock bands. Three of the four band members are wearing dark clothing which signifies how they are less interested about their image such as pleasing teenage girls, which seems to be the focus from synthetic rock band's record companies. The fourth member of the band at the band is not wearing a top which clearly shows how he takes an organic approach by the way he is shown. In our band we will have similarities with Kings Of Leon as the lead singer is going to be topless, with the rest of the band wearing organic and dark clothing in order to showcase a persona of traditional heavy rock.

The image above is in grey-scale which demonstrates how the band are organic and do not appeal to a female audience, as their image is very masculine. We can see that some band members have their hands in their pockets which showcases how the band are very organic by the way they stand up. Their clothes also look different and the band members maintain a serious face towards the camera to portray their originality and how they conform to stereotypical rock bands who look very scary, dark and sinister. Our band will be similar to this since we will be dressed differently and will have organic faces towards the camera in order to convey the rock image of our band.

The band's CD covers tend to be plain black with an image in the middle, which does not refer to the band or its members. The band's name is at the top in small text which conveys how the band aren't selling themselves by their name and are organic in the choice of image that they choose to be in the middle. Our CD cover will definitely feature some aspects of graphically designed images such as the ones that Kings of Leon have in their CD covers.

The band's website is vibrant and interactive, with animation being used in the main body of the website. The band have used a unique and organic look that is portrayed in their website since it differs from many other band's websites, including The 1975. Our website will most likely not feature use of animation, however the design can definitely give us ideas as to how we layout our website.

Our first design for an album cover

These are our first attempts of making an album cover for our band. We want it to be a simple yet organic cover that doesn't reveal too much about us but at least gives the audience a glimpse of what our music genre is. The brick wall in the background is just to show emphasis of the name as well as the music. It connotes that there is something behind it awaiting to be presented. The album is called 'Look Behind'. The filters give a certain authenticity to the cover and the guitar shows off the genre. However this is the start of the cover and we want to accentuate the originality by adding the band to the cover and making it seem as we are bringing the old into the new. An example of this is with the Ramones album.

We would like to feature the band to make it more appealing and that the public gets a better sense of what the album is really about. Also we will use a simple filter that coheres with the video's authentic grainy look and not making it too sharp. We want to make the cover as realistic as possible so we are going to go on a photoshoot and find the best place to photograph the band.

Changing the length of our song

When writing out the timeline we noticed that the song was 5 minutes long and this was too long as we thought the music video would get a bit repetitive with the narrative. Therefore, we cut the music video to just over 3 mins so that there is always something impactful happening in the video. We used software called Magix Music Maker Pro.

Technical Aspects of a music video

1. Speed is visualised by camera movements, fast editing (montage) and digital effects

  • Camera Movement is often motivated by running, dancing and walking performers.
  • Fast-cutting and montage editing creates a visually decentred experience necessary for music video consumption, with the images occasionally moving so fast that hey are impossible to understand on first-viewing and this need to be viewed several times (repeatability).
  • Post-production digital effects - a staple of music video where images can be colourized, multiple split screens appear, and so on , all to complicate and intrigue, providing pleasure again and again.
Not all camera movement is about speed though and some use slow pace through dissolves or static shots. This kind of editing - like in Sinead O'Conner's 'Nothing Compares To You' - is striking and effective in setting the song apart from the hustle and bustle of most pop activity.

2. The meat of most music video is the cut to the close-up of the singers face. This is because the voice is seen as the most important part of pop music.

3. Often, the video will try and represent the music through the use of the cut to go with the beat or key rhythm.

4. Lighting and colour may also be used to emphasise key moments in the song, using methods from lighting live performances for dramatic effect. Colour may be used to show a development in the song, going form colour to black and white or visa versa when he chorus comes in. Equally, any change in the mise-en-scene or camera work can signal the same type of thing.

5. Mise-en-scene - obviously the setting for music videos is important, often to guarantee the authenticity of the clip rather than anything else. So mise-en-scne for many music videos is the concert hall or rehearsal room to emphasise the realness of the performance or the grit and practice that goes into attaining star quality. Increasingly, CGI is used, especially for dance songs, which don't rely so much on being 'real' like rock, soul and rap acts.

Development of our idea

We decided to change our music choice to What Went Down - The Foals. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, the lyrics matched the narrative we want to try and convey and we liked the drum beats at the beginning of the song and we felt that we could use the 3 drum beats to our benefit in the actual music video and really make them stand out.

We also slightly changed the narrative. We were going to include an element of domestic violence and include more actors of the lead singer. However, we have come to the conclusion that acting out domestic violence is very hard to do as usually parents are really bad actors. We didn't want to complicate our music video by finding 3 or 4 actors of different ages who look somewhat similar so we decided to create a narrative that shows a boy who goes through a number of hardships in his younger years but finally pulls through and makes it in a successful band in the end. The narrative is basically to shown 'What went down' when he was growing up.

In terms of props, we had the idea to use sugar glass bottles for a scene when two bullies beat the boy. However, we decided we cannot use this because we don't want to risk hurting the boy when filming and the bottles are over our budget. We wanted our costumes for the actors to look simple but effective, therefore we are going for a look similar to The Ramones where they will be casual but styled.

Taking in the feedback we got from peers we decided we will use a target audience of teenagers as we believe that the narrative we are trying to portray may be able to help some people who are going from a similar time in their life and may also be able to get through it.

Music Video Idea Feedback

Music Video Feedback

We were given feedback from our idea by our peers that we need to evaluate as well as learn from. Firstly we need to work on a specific audience as we haven't fully specified who they are and what we expect from them. This will mean we can enter markets to gain maximum exposure towards the band but as well as the genre we will present. We should also find concepts to make our band stand out, so maybe incorporating it by editing our video very precisely as well as making it seem realistic. Audience wise, we need to engage with an audience so that they can relate to our intricate parts of the video like our costumes or locations. We also need to make sure our narrative flows and follows a sequence of events so that is understandable for those who may not get what we are trying to say. Based on this, I believe we should approach a teenage audience as in today's world teenagers seem not just the most interested in music but for our bands indie rock genre, the main percentage of fans of similar bands are of a teenage age.

Furthermore, the people we asked for feedback from seemed a little unsure about the narrative and the plot. We had very little time to explain the plot and it is very hard to explain how we want it to look without pictures or actually filming the music video yet.

Overall this feedback gives us the implication that a lot of work is needed to be able to pull of this music video and that we need to make it perfect in order to champion the narrative. We have also decided to combat the feedback by focusing more on our performance element to show the organic side of our artist to maximise our bands exposure as an Indie Rock Band. Our narrative also needs to tell the story of the bands star image from a working class background towards stardom.
